| What is the difference between a Generic and a Brand Name diet Pill? |
When a pharmaceutical company develops a new drug, it gives the drug two names. The first one is its generic name. It represents the chemical structure or chemical form of the drug. The generic name of a drug never changes. So if we take Phentermine as an example, its generic name is PHENTERMINE. The second name given to a drug is its brand name. This is the name given to the medicine by the pharmaceutical company and has nothing to do with its chemical form. Example brand names of the phentermine are discussing are ADIPEX-P, IONAMIN and DUROMINE. All three are similar in that they are composed of PHENTERMINE, and subsequently given different names by the companies that manufacturer them. No other pharmaceutical company can ever use the brand name of the drug at any time.
To sum up using Phentermine as an example:-
PHENTERMINE HYDROCHLORIDE is the GENERIC NAME
ADIPEX-P, IONAMIN, FASTIN, DUROMINE are example BRAND NAMES.
ADIPEX-P, IONAMIN and DUROMINE only vary in the manner in which the PHENTERMINE is released into your blood stream. They are formulated for immediate release or time-release into your system. Immediate release pills enter your blood stream as soon as you take them, and time-release capsules release their medication into your body over an extended period of time, generally 8 or 12 hours. Most branded compounds are considered clinically equivalent in producing weight loss with only the dosage, presentation and dispensation being varied.
Considerable confusion exists that generic diet pills are cheaper than brand name medications. This is as a result of brand selling, packaging, advertising, marketing and name registration costs. "Generics" are still phentermine without the concomitant brand name costs. The use of the word "generic" has been diluted in the pharmaceutical industry and is not in any way an indication of an inferior or superior quality product. On the international markets patents are held on the chemical formulae. With time these patents elapse and the drug can be made by other drug companies without the advertising , research and development costs of the original inventor. This can result in cheaper drugs with a new brand name but the same chemical composition. These are often termed generics. This is technically incorrect as they are actually brand names of the basic generic drug.
