| Presentation:- |
Xenical is available as a dark-blue, hard-gelatin capsule, with light-blue imprinting. Each capsule contains 120 mg of Orlistat which is the active ingredient in Xenical. (Note This prescription diet drug is often incorrectly called Zenical ). |
 |
| Properties:- |
Orlistat (Xenical) works by preventing your intestines from absorbing some of the fat from the food you eat. When taken 3 times a day, Orlistat blocks about one-third of the fat you eat from being absorbed. This fat passes through your intestines and is excreted in your stool. When you absorb less fat, you take in fewer calories, which causes weight loss. Orlistat does not affect your appetite. Xenical is often termed a fat blocker.
Xenical does not act centrally on the brain to reduce appetite. Its action takes place in the lumen of the stomach and absorption of the drug into the blood is minimal. Xenical is a reversible inhibitor of lipases made in the stomach and pancreas. Lipases are enzymes that break down fat. After we eat a fatty meal (such as meat) fats reach the stomach in a form called triglycerides. Triglycerides cannot be absorbed into the blood unless lipases break them down into compounds called fatty acids. Xenical prevents this breakdown and the undigested triglycerides are excreted into the stool. The resulting decrease in caloric intake can have a positive effect on weight control.
In one clinical study, weight loss attributed to Xenical was seen as early as 2 weeks after starting this medicine. In patients who participate in a graded exercise program that slowly increases the amount of physical activity performed each week, weight loss my be seen ever faster. |
| Why It Is Used:- |
Orlistat is prescribed to help people who are obese (those with body mass indexes [BMIs] of 30 or higher) lose weight. It may also be prescribed for people with BMIs of 27 or higher when they have other conditions (such as diabetes or sleep apnea) that are made worse by being overweight.
Orlistat is designed to be used along with a mildly reduced-calorie diet (a diet that includes no more than 30% of its calories from fat). A regular exercise program is also an important part of any weight-loss treatment plan.
Xenical® is a prescription weight-control medication useful for the long-term treatment of significant obesity. Meridia and Xenical are the only weight-loss medications approved for longer-term use in significantly obese people. One of the benefits of Xenical is that while you lose weight, you are changing your eating habits and lifestyle. By the time you have reached your goal, you may be able to maintain your weight through diet and exercise alone. If, however, you start to regain weight, you can safely resume taking Xenical. Xenical has been shown to be safe for up to two years of continuous use. Xenical can become part of your long-term weight maintenance program.
Xenical® can also help to improve risk factors, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and high blood sugar which, if not treated, could lead to other diseases such as hypertension and diabetes.
Xenical® is a weight loss medication that targets the absorption of fat in your body rather than suppressing your appetite. It is useful for long term use and has been shown to be effective for 1-2 years. Dietary fats are inhibited from being absorbed and this allows about 30% of the fat eaten in the meal to pass through the gut undigested. This helps you to reduce and maintain your weight, as well as to minimize any weight regain. |
| Dosage:- |
| One capsule (120milligrams) is taken three times daily with each main meal Taking a capsule with each meal is convenient and easy to remember. Your daily fat intake should be divided equally between these three meals so you will benefit from Xenical's actions. Your medicine should be swallowed with water. You should not take more than 3 Xenical capsules per day. |
| Missed Dosage:- |
| Resume taking Xenical at the next meal. Do not try to make up the loss with a double dose. The extra capsule will not help. |
| Over Dosage:- |
| If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose include restlessness, tremor, rapid breathing, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps |
| Storage:- |
| Store this medicine at room temperature in a tightly-closed container, away from heat and light. |
| Side Effects of Xenical:- |
Xenical has none of the side effects normally associated with diet medications that act on the brain. Xenical's side effects are strictly gastrointestinal in nature and related to its action of blocking the digestion of ingested fat. The fat that is not absorbed into the bloodstream remains in the intestine and becomes mixed with the stool. The increased fat in the stool can cause any of the following:-
Loose stools.
Increased gas or flatulence - sometimes with oily spotting.
increased frequency of bowel movements.
These symptoms are generally mild, occur at the beginning of treatment, go away after a short period of time and are particularly experienced after meals containing high levels of fat. Normally, these symptoms disappear if you continue treatment and keep to your recommended diet.
Xenical® reduces the absorption of supplements of some fat soluble nutrients, particularly beta-carotene and vitamin E. You should therefore follow your doctor's advice in taking a well balanced diet rich in fruit and vegetables.
How often or how quickly these effects occur will vary from person to person and will depend on how much extra fat was consumed. They can occur within hours after eating a meal or up to a day or two later. These side effects usually occur early in treatment, last for only a short period, and disappear over time. Importantly, you can control the effects if you control your fat intake. Remember: it's not the Xenical, it's the fat you eat that causes the events.
We stress - if you experience any weird symptoms and or side effects on any diet medication you should immediately stop taking the medication and contact your doctor or patient care at the pharmacy your purchased the pill from.

| General Xenical Information:- |
Along with dietary fat, Xenical decreases the absorption of some fat-soluble vitamins and beta-carotene. To compensate, you should take a multivitamin containing vitamins A, E, D, and K once a day, at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after taking Xenical. Bedtime is a very convenient time to take your vitamin.
Phentermine, Ionamin, Adipex, Tenuate, Bontril-Sr and Didrex are all appetite suppressants. Xenical inhibits fat absorption into the body. Xenical may be used in conjunction with an appetite suppressant for those who are seriously obese.
